How this works

The resize happens inside a Web Worker in this browser tab, using a Lanczos-style resampling filter, so edges stay smooth instead of going jaggy the way a cheap nearest-neighbour scale does. The image never reaches a server.

  • Preset sizes are real platform values, and each one is documented in the source with where it came from — YouTube asks for 3840×2160 for video thumbnails, for instance, not the 1280×720 people often repeat.
  • With the aspect ratio locked, the image scales to fit inside the box you type, so nothing is stretched. Unlock it to set an exact width and height.
  • Small images are left alone unless you tick Allow enlarging: interpolation can add pixels but not detail.
  • A batch resizes every image to the same box, then comes back as a single ZIP.
  • Nothing is stored: reloading the page discards everything.

1280 × 720 is the 16:9 frame at 720p, and it turns up in more places than the name suggests: a still pulled from a video for a player's poster frame, a background for a slide deck set to widescreen, a placeholder in a template that expects a fixed box. Because those fields are filled in by hand rather than by a preset, they stay editable, and the aspect-ratio lock is what keeps them in proportion. With the lock on, changing the width adjusts the height for you from the image's own shape, so you can type one number and let the tool work out the other.

What the resize does with those two values is worth being precise about, since 16:9 is a shape and your photo probably is not one. The image is scaled to fit inside 1280 × 720 with its proportions intact. A 4:3 photo becomes 960 × 720; a tall portrait becomes 405 × 720. Nothing is cropped and nothing is stretched, so if the picture has to fill the full 16:9 frame, crop it to that ratio first and then resize to these exact numbers.

Three practical notes for this particular size:

  • Upscaling is off unless you turn it on. A source smaller than 1280 × 720 stays at its own size rather than being enlarged and softened, and the result panel shows the dimensions you actually got.
  • Choose the output format for where the file is going. WebP is the default and is usually the smallest. For a file that has to open in a video editor or an older desktop application, JPEG is the safer choice — some editors still will not read WebP.
  • Transparency only survives in WebP and PNG. If your source is a logo with a transparent background and you pick JPEG, the empty area is flattened onto white, and the result panel tells you when that happened.
