How this works

Your images are decoded and re-encoded inside a Web Worker in this browser tab, so the page stays responsive and the files never reach a server. There is no backend, no queue and no account.

Fifty kilobytes is worth being blunt about: a photograph at 50 KB is a small image, roughly a thumbnail or a preview, not something to print. If a form demands that ceiling, this page starts with 50 in the target box so you can find out straight away whether your file can reach it at all.

The compressor will try hard. It searches quality settings all the way down to the lowest one that still produces a real image, and hands you the smallest file it can make. If that is still over 50 KB, it says so with the actual number instead of quietly giving you something that will be rejected.

Where 50 KB works comfortably:

  • Flat images. Logos, icons, diagrams, charts and screenshots of text have large areas of a single colour and compress enormously. Many land well under 50 KB even at their original dimensions.
  • Photographs at reduced pixel dimensions. An 800 pixel wide photo reaches 50 KB with mild softness that most people will not notice at the size it gets displayed.
  • Images you are willing to crop. Removing the irrelevant half of a picture spends no bytes on what you were going to delete anyway.

Where it does not: a detailed photograph at full resolution. No quality setting gets a 4000 pixel landscape into 50 KB without smearing it, and pushing the search lower only trades detail for artefacts.

What actually helps, roughly in order of power:

  • Cut the pixel dimensions first. Set a max width around 800 and the rest becomes easy.
  • Prefer WebP over JPEG; at this budget the difference is often a third of the file.
  • Crop before compressing if part of the image is not needed.

There is also a floor to how far encoders will go. Below a certain quality value browsers stop producing anything usable, so the true minimum size depends on the image rather than on how hard you push. Use the before and after slider here: if the compressed side already looks soft at 50 KB, that is the image telling you the budget is too small, and the honest answer is fewer pixels rather than more compression.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my image still over 50 KB?

Because quality alone cannot always get there. Below the encoder's useful range the file stops shrinking meaningfully, and the remaining bytes are the picture itself. Reduce the pixel dimensions and the same image will fit.

Is 50 KB too small for a photograph?

For viewing on a screen at moderate size, no. For printing, yes — there is not enough detail left. If the photo is going to be printed, aim for a JPEG in the hundreds of kilobytes instead.

Will 50 KB make my image look bad?

It depends on what is in it. Flat graphics look almost unchanged; detailed photographs start showing softness and blocking. The comparison slider shows both versions side by side so you can judge before you download.

Should I resize instead of compressing to 50 KB?

Usually both, in that order: fewer pixels first, then a target size on the smaller image. That combination reaches 50 KB with far less visible damage than compression alone.
